I know….not exactly a fun topic but a timely one with winter coming on. My Aunts in Boston lost their house to an electrical fire about 10 years ago, and it destroyed them for quite some time. Its a story I hope to never hear again from someone I know, and hopefully this post will prevent further electrical fires that can easily be avoided by just being observant.
The pic I posted was from a home maintenance inspection I did yesterday in a great part of Atlanta called Renyolds Town. This was an receptacle that was arcing from a loose wire, it had melted the receptacle and the back up battery from the old alarm system. It was well on it’s way to starting a fire within the wall, and possibly a total loss for the homeowner.
Take a peek every now and then at your receptacles for burns, melting, and put your hand near them. If you feel a lot of heat, I mean enough to cook on…..call a licensed electrician to evaluate. If you can, turn the breaker off that controls that circuit. But remember to take safety precautions and do not remove the outlet cover or the main panel cover.
